Kabila Student Parent Community Union was founded in response to the outcry of the Only Black Student (OBS) in our K -12 schools. We exist to be a resource for Black students and parents navigating school systems where African Americans are less than 15% of the population.
It is our goal to rebuild the foundation that was the Black neighborhood. Though many of us don’t live on the same block anymore, we envision a vibrant virtual community that gathers monthly to offer each other wisdom, guidance, support, and strength.
Kabila is Swahili for Tribe.
The pressure of being the O.B.S. (only Black student) in class can translate to depression, stress, and anxiety. Kabila offers a safe space to build community and thrive bringing together students who are less than 15% of their school population.
Kabila supports parents by offering parenting groups, resources, and connections to other families. Many of the parents of our O.B.S. today were themselves O.B.S. and need support to properly support their children.
The loss of "Miss Johnson" and "Mr. Davis" who deposited wisdom, knowledge, and skills into the lives of the young people was devastating to the Black community. At Kabila, we seek to re-establish elders' positions in our youth's lives.
KABILA is a division of Conceptual Art Therapy, a nonprofit organization. Kabila serves African American youth who are 15% or less of their school by forming safe spaces for them to learn, grow and thrive. Your donation of any amount helps us do this important work in combating the Only Black Student Syndrome.
